Template subpages

edit

For example, I noticed that Template:Number cat/data and Template:Number cat/layout (but not the doc subpage) are used and transcluded by more than 57000 pages, they even have some more transclusions than their main Template:Number cat. But only the latter main template has been semiprotected years ago. I could edit those two subpages. And any vandalising IP or new user could vandalise over 57000 pages at once. I think they should be semiprotected, too. I could imagine even more of those subpages which aren’t protected at all, just because they were forgotten, but which also are used that often. Perhaps a tool or a bot could find those often transcluded template (sub)pages, so they can get semiprotection. What is the transclusion limit, that such pages will be semiprotected or templateprotected? I didn’t found one in the protection policy. —176.1.12.108 11:06, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and 2 function talk pages

edit

First, thanks for re-opening this main function page for all users after 3 years of protection, when no IP or new user could request unprotection for any page in this wiki anymore (or protection of any page as in the section above this one). I suppose that there will be a lot more protected pages than necessary now after such a long time. Therefore it’s good to reactivate this page again.

I think that this applies in a similar way also to the following function page and both talk pages: Please unprotected Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons talk:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons talk:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections. Those pages made the protection circle around these pages complete, therefore they should be unprotected again and get their function back for all users.

More concrete: The main admin noticeboard was protected by A.Savin over 2 years ago in June 2023 because of vandalism at that time. Perhaps he could unprotect it himself? The talk pages of both function pages also were both protected over 2 years ago by Mdaniels5757, because of this reason:

  • "No reason IPs and non-established users need to edit this page normally; if an actual discussion occurs please unprotect so they can participate."

None of those 4 pages could be used anymore in the last 2 years, they have lost their functions for IP and new users completely. And obviously, for no discussion in this long time, the talk pages were unprotected again. It’s not practicable to open a page only, if their already is a discussion on the page. Nobody then remembers anymore to unprotect the page for an on-going discussion. Instead, it should be protected only, if their is an actual reason for it, and, on talk pages or function pages, only for shorter terms.

I already requested the unprotection a few days ago on Mdaniels talk page about this whole protection circle around this function page for (un)protection requests. In consequence, this one page has been unprotected, but not the talk pages. The discussion there was about this page and also about, if it could be split. This discussion could have taken place here on the talk page, if it wouldn’t be protected all the time. This shows that no discussion about this page will open the talk page. And it should not stay protected for more years any longer. This would serve the wiki better and would not exclude whole user groups for many years from main function talk pages. Neither the main admin noticeboard nor their two talk pages could serve as fall-back in the last 2 years that this page had been closed for all IP and new users. So this user group couldn’t request any unprotection of any page anymore, neither here nor on the other 3 protected function pages and its talk pages. This is problematic, so please open all those pages again for all users and give them a new start. And please protect those pages only for shorter terms and in actual cases in the future. —176.1.12.108 15:54, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

As for the indefinite protection of the two talk pages that still is on the pages now for more than 2 years, I want to add that it’s the first protection of those 2 pages ever. They have never been protected before 2023, see their protection logs. This is really too long for their first protections. And the main admin function page Commons:Administrators' noticeboard should be usable for all users, if they have any other request for admins besides blocks or protections. Or should they request other requests on function pages for user blocks instead, where these would be wrong? This defunctioning of main function pages for a whole user group for such a long time (indefinite) including its talk pages is a problem for this wiki. —176.1.12.108 16:34, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I think the talk pages should stay protected because people edit them by mistake instead of the main pages. But I will also give unprotection a try on COM:AN. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:42, 2 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

This file was previously uploaded by User:মো আল ফাহাদ and subsequently deleted as a copyvio, while the account was blocked at bn.wikipedia and en.wikisource for spamming. Now the file was recreated by User:এম এ সালাম বাগেরহাট, who is most probably a sockpuppet of the previous account. I would like to ask for deleting the file again and blocking both accounts. -- Jan Kameníček (talk) 16:12, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

It says this is sysop protected but evidently it's not if you look at its history. Why? Jonteemil (talk) 19:58, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Jonteemil: It is sufficient that "You cannot overwrite this file." Someone decided to lessen the actual protection provided by cascading protection.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:00, 1 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Matrix, unfortunately it doesn't work. I know how to bypass it. I have many things to deal with in real life at least until 2027, and this is consuming my time and sanity. Yacàwotçã (talk) 20:19, 2 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
